IPmotion GmbH is the first and world leading manufacturer of high availability mobile routers. The IPmotion product CAR-A-WAN is the mother-of-all mobile routers since the year 2000. The CAR-A-WAN technology stands for easy, fast and reliable mobile access to company networks and the Internet from vehicles, trains and ships.

One of the most important features of the CAR-A-WAN is its ability to use up to three radio modules and to make the increased bandwidth available to the connected users.

Initially developed for the project "Berlin Livetaxi" (berlin.de + SAT.1) in 1999, we created the first mobile router. It was clear from the beginning that only a multiplexed mobile connexion of independend carriers can guarantee a fail-safe data link to and from moving vehicles. Result of that project was the first CAR-A-WAN based on four parallel HSCSD modules. For the live test we equipped a regular cab with the prototype, the "Berlin Livetaxi". From May 2000 to September 2000, this cab carried passengers for 14 hours each day within Berlin and transmitted a video live stream from the cab to the net. This very popular livestreaming event was on the air for more than 1000 hours and is until today an unparalleled live test of cellular technology.

The company newest produkt, the CAR-A-WAN type two, is the only mobile router built for automotive and industry environments.

Due to the flexible PC104 technology employed, the CAR-A-WAN type two is very modular und can be customized easily to satisfy individual requirements. Linux as the on-board operating system contributes to the high level of flexibility and allows third party systems integrators to quickly create individual solutions.

The CAR-A-WAN supports every 16- and 32bit PC card (PCMCIA) cellular modem. The router is compatible with GPRS, EDGE, 1xEVDO, 1xRTT, UMTS (3G), HSPA+ and LTE, as well as with future technologies being made available in the PC card (PCMCIA) form factor.
